For ILI, friendship is usually a small circle built over time, not a steady stream of new connections. They rarely make the first move, yet can become deeply engaged when a conversation turns to something they care about. Their dry humor and sharp observations often appear only after someone has spent enough time with them.

A conversation worth staying for

They can listen closely and offer an unusual angle on a problem. They may also share useful information without being asked, especially when they know it will help. But their criticism can arrive so quickly that a friend’s good news gets followed by a warning or a qualification. The intention is often to be realistic; the effect can feel like having the joy taken out of the moment.

They do not always return to something a friend once confided in them. That does not mean they forgot or stopped caring. They may assume that, if the friend wants to talk about it again, the friend will bring it up. Their response to another person’s excitement can also be quieter than expected, so a friend may mistake their reserve for indifference.

Someone who keeps the door open

Friendship is easier when the other person takes the initiative: reaches out again, suggests a clear plan, and gives a specific time. An open-ended “we should meet sometime” may never turn into a meeting. With a concrete invitation, ILI are more likely to say yes—and to enjoy themselves once they are there.

Strengths

  • Loyalty that lastsOnce someone is part of their circle, the bond can remain steady for years without constant reassurance.
  • Useful information, offered freelyThey pass along what they have learned when they think it may genuinely help a friend.
  • A perspective others may missTheir analysis can reveal a pattern or consequence that was hidden in the first impression.
  • Attention shown by stayingIf they remain in a conversation and keep listening, that is often a real sign of interest, even without animated reactions.
  • Fairness between friendsThey are less likely to take sides just to preserve a group’s approval, and can give an impartial view.
  • Steadiness through changing circumstancesTheir regard for a friend does not depend much on status, popularity, or what that person can offer them.

Weaknesses

  • Confidences are not always revisitedThey may wait for the friend to raise a difficult subject again, leaving the friend to feel that it was forgotten.
  • A cool first impressionTheir reserve can make a new acquaintance think they are uninterested before their warmer side has had a chance to show.
  • Good news meets a cautionThey may point out what could go wrong before sharing in a friend’s excitement.
  • Realism can sound discouragingLow expectations may be heard as a judgment on the friend’s effort, even when they are only assessing the likely outcome.
  • Joy receives a small visible responseTheir quiet reaction may leave a friend unsure whether they are happy for them.
  • The circle can keep shrinkingSince they rarely initiate contact, friendships may fade simply because no one sets the next meeting.
